Dear 6th Grade Parents,
This week we discussed ראש חודש ("Rosh Chodesh") the head or beginning of the Jewish month. Tonight (Tuesday beginning at nightfall and continuing until nightfall on Wednesday) we celebrated ראש חודש Shevat.
We took a pop quiz to determine our baseline knowledge of the Jewish celebration of the lunar cycle and then we discussed our answers and important facts about ראש חודש. We learned that Rosh Chodesh can be celebrated for one or two days depending on the length of the month, how the determination of the new moon/month was made in the times of the Sanhedrin and how that changed in the era since the Sanhedrin, and the additional prayers and additions to our regular prayers that we get to say in honor of this monthly occurrence--to name a few of the facts we covered. We also spoke about the special connection between Jewish women and Rosh Chodesh in honor of our non-participation in the sin of the Golden Calf.
(Have a wonderful month) חודש טוב !!
