Hello 7th Grade Families,
This past week our class examined
the concept of justice (Tzedek) in Judaism. We delved into a variety of Jewish
texts, with the foundation of these texts being the Torah verse which states “tzedek
tzedek tirdof” (righteousness and justice you shall pursue). We looked at a
few real world examples of how we can apply these principles. We conducted a
mock trial through which the learners experienced how a Jewish court is set up
and some of the rules involved with handing out justice. The case challenged
the learners to balance the ideas of striving to give a person the benefit of
the doubt, but on the other hand examining facts and evidence to objectively
determine when that person is in the wrong, and what then to do about it. We
also examined the issue of hunger in a local and global context, and what
responsibilities we have according to our tradition to help those in need.
We also continued our weekly
tefillah/song session, where the learners had a chance to sing some of their
favorite camp songs as well as learn some new ones. Music has the power to
bring people together, and it is so nice to see our class singing Jewish songs
as a community.
As always, Erin and I look forward
to learning with our wonderful class, and sharing with each other the deep
knowledge and value system that our beautiful tradition has to offer. Have a
Shabbat Shalom and a fantastic week.
David and Erin
