GOT STUFF

Welcome Back!

This week the students in Kitah Dalet had some time to talk about stuff.  We talked about the things we need and the things we want, and the basic necessities one needs to survive.  Students worked in small groups and compiled lists of all the things they wanted,  and I must tell you, the list was  quite extensive. I was really quite surprised with the desires of our young students, as this list was created after eight days of Hanukkah and many days at the beach or out and about on staycations.   We had cars and houses and a variety of devices, and our students had a great time thinking of all the things they wanted but did not need.  Then we hit the brakes and talked about how much is too much, and how they hoped to acquire these extravagant desires. We talked about the haves and the have nots, and the fine line between being greedy, obnoxious, and flamboyant.  We talked about what GOD expects of us in terms of stuff, and had an interesting discussion about how much is too much.

Our classroom discussion led us to the concept "avodah" which translates as both work and worship and the importance of working hard for what we want.  We talked about our responsibility to GOD, our community, and our self, and most decided that the only way to acquire such wealth was through hard work.  We talked about caring for others and making sure we share the wealth through acts of kindness, Torah study, and dedication to GOD.  Thank you for sharing your children with us, and for the kind and generous Hanukkah gifts.  Wishing you a happy and healthy new year, Barbara
